Hundreds Ban Themselves From Ohio Casinos

According to a recent report, hundreds of gamblers have voluntarily banned themselves from Ohio's four casinos. Muskingum Behavioral Health CEO, Steve Carrel, says the effort has actually proven effective.

"It actually works for those people who have a gambling problem but aren't real severe," said Carrel.

"For those people that have started to lose control of their gambling and they know that they need some help in avoiding going to the casinos."

Carrel says one downside to the voluntary banning is that while some casinos restrict you from entering if you are on the list, others only identify you if you win. Carrel says there are good efforts at managing gambling addictions, but says there is always more that can be done.

"I also at the same time was looking 'Ok, if I have a gambling problem, where do I go?' And I was looking at the different websites and it was not easy to find where to go get help. And the internet has become the number one place where people get their information a lot of times and it was difficult to find.

Carrel says certain medications can actually trigger gambling urges in some people. For more information you can call the Muskingum Behavioral Health office at 740-454-1266.
